02
Notice of Disclosure of Personal Information to Statistics Canada

Statistics Canada is the federal agency responsible for statistics. It conducts hundreds of surveys each year on various topics, including education. Tracking students and educational institutions over time is essential to understanding factors such as those influencing enrolment demand. In addition, given the increased need to report on public investments, it is important to understand “outcomes.” To conduct such studies, Statistics Canada asks all colleges and universities to provide data on students and graduates.

Institutions collect and transmit to Statistics Canada personal information about each student, including their name, ID and Social Insurance Number, contact information (address and telephone number), demographic data, previous education and labour market experience, and enrolment information. The Statistics Act gives Statistics Canada the legal authority to access personal information held by educational institutions. This information may be used exclusively for statistical purposes, and the confidentiality provisions of the Statistics Act prohibit any disclosure of information that could identify a student. Anyone who does not wish their information to be used may request that Statistics Canada remove their personal data (name, address, or other personal identifiers) from the national database. To submit such a request or for any questions concerning the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS), please contact us at:
