Collège Boréal offers Settlement, Information and Orientation services as well as Training programs to newcomers to Canada.

These services are FREE OF CHARGE and help you get settled in your new community

 

Settlement, Information and Orientation Services for Newcomers  

  • needs assessment and orientation services to help you plan your next steps;
  • entrepreneurial services* on how to start and develop your own business;
  • help with administrative tasks such as getting a health card, obtaining a Social Insurance Number (SIN), and finding affordable housing;
  • referrals to community services;
  • interpretation services;
  • information sessions and workshops.

*A similar service is available in Windsor.

Eligibility requirements: You must be 18 years or older, be a permanent resident, convention refugee, or protected person.

Newcomer Settlement Program

The objective of the Newcomer Settlement Program (NSP) is to support the successful settlement and integration of newcomers through the provision of targeted quality services. The ultimate goal of the program is to help newcomers integrate successfully and become fully engaged in the social, cultural, civic and economic life of Ontario.

Eligibility requirements: You must be 18 years or older, be a permanent resident, convention refugee, protected person, naturalized Canadians, refugee claimant, international student, Temporary Foreign Worker, or an approved Ontario Provincial Nominee.

Language Training for Immigrants LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada)

These FREE courses will help you develop your English language skills in comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing while becoming familiar with the workings and requirements of the Canadian workplace and Culture. We offer Canadian Language Benchmarks 0 to 7. Full time and part-time day classes and evening classes available. Continuous intake; childminding and transportation services available to those who qualify.

Enhanced Language Training (ELT)

Dedicated to newcomers who have achieved Level 6+ of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), this course will allow you to improve your language skills. After 8 weeks of in-class language training, students participate in a 5-week work placement or a mentorship with a Canadian employer.

French Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (CLIC)

The French Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (CLIC) is designed to help learners improve their proficiency in French in order to increase their opportunities for a successful integration into the Canadian job market. There is a strong focus on Canadian cultural appropriateness in both social and workplace situations. Evening part-time classes are available for CLIC 4 – 7 (NCLC).

OSLT (Occupation-specific Language Training)

Occupation-specific Language Training in English is offered for FREE to newcomers in Ontario who need to improve their occupation-specific communication skills. These courses are offered at colleges across Ontario, including Collège Boréal. Courses run 180 hours and classes are offered both in the evening and during the day. Some courses are offered in “blended” format that combines face-to-face classroom instruction with online and web-based elements.

Free Occupation-specific Language Training in English for newcomers offers:

  • Language training geared to your occupation.
  • Practical exercises based on actual workplace communications tasks.
  • Career-planning assistance.
  • Opportunities to connect with local employers, industries and resources.

If you have training or experience in one of the occupations or sectors below, OSLT might be for you!

  • Workplace Communication Skills for Health Care
  • Workplace Communication Skills for Business, Entrepreneurship and Sales & Marketing

You are eligible for Workplace Communication Skills for Health Care if:

  • you have training or experience in one of the following: dental hygiene, medical laboratory technology, medical radiation technology, nursing, personal support work, sleep technology
  • your English is at an intermediate level (Canadian Language Benchmarks 6 to 8)
  • you are a permanent resident of Canada or protected person 

You are eligible for Workplace Communication Skills for Business, Entrepreneurship and Sales & Marketing if:

  • you have training or experience in running your own business or in sales and marketing
  • your English is at an intermediate level (Canadian Language Benchmarks 6 to 8)
  • you are a permanent resident of Canada or protected person.
