Description:

This 20-week program prepares the student to work as a mason/bricklayer. Workplace safety, the use of tools and equipment, building and repairing walls, floors and arches, paving, partition walls, fireplaces, chimneys and other structures are elements covered in this course.

The principal skills of  this trade are manual dexterity, mechanical aptitude, problem-solving and sequential thinking; candidates must also be able to tolerate heights. A bricklayer/mason's job is physically demanding and requires considerable effort for tasks such as lifting heavy materials, climbing, bending, kneeling and working on a scaffold.

This work is primarily done outdoors, where masons are exposed to all types of weather. Job-site preparation for winter conditions allows work to continue year-round. Job-site safety and accident prevention are a priority.

Admission requirements:

  • Ontario high school diploma or its equivalent in another province, or mature student status
  • 1 French credit (mandatory group course): grade 11 or 12, pre-college or pre-university
