Description:

This program, the only one of its kind available in French in Ontario, covers the theoretical and practical aspects of the industry. For the first eight months, course content focuses primarily on human biology, physiopathology, embalming, the psychology of mourning, law and ethics. Next, the student continues to learn as an intern in a funeral home under the supervision of an accredited funeral services director. The intern will meet grieving individuals, embalm bodies, organize visits to the funeral home and direct funeral services with consideration for cultural and religious diversity. At the end of the internship, the student is eligible to sit for the provincial certification examination.

Admission requirements:

  • Ontario high school diploma or its equivalent from another province, or mature student status
  • 2 French credits (at least 1 mandatory group course): grade 11 or 12, pre-college or pre-university
  • 1 biology credit: grade 11 or 12, pre-college or pre-university
  • 1 English credit: grade 11 or 12, pre-college or pre-university
  • 1 chemistry or physics credit: grade 11 or 12, pre-college or pre-university
     

Other requirements:

  • Standard first aid certificate (before October 15, 2010)*
  • First aid certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR (before October 15, 2010*)
  • Category G driver’s licence (before the start of semester 3)
  • Current immunizations (including 2-step tuberculin test)
  • Mandatory observation or practical period (40 hours) in a funeral home, after admission to the program (a form will be sent)

*First aid and CPR courses are offered several times throughout the college session by the Adult and Continuing Education Service of Collège Boréal

Notes:

  • It is essential to be able to communicate orally and in writing in both French and English during clinical internships
  • The student may be required to travel outside the region for clinical internships
