Apprenticeship

Requirements and admission process related to the Apprenticeship program

An Apprenticeship program is a practical training program for individuals who wish to obtain a professional training, while at the same time working in their field. The individual trained through an Apprenticeship program is called an apprentice.

This training includes a practical component offered in the work environment by an employer (sponsor) and a theoretical component usually taught by a community college or another recognized training establishment.

The apprentices gains the required knowledge, abilities and aptitudes, by following a theoretical training and by filling various duties related to the job or the profession he is interests in under the supervision of qualified individuals.

On average, an Apprenticeship program can spread over a period of 2 to 5 years.

After having successfully completed a practical and theoretical training, the apprentice receives a learning certificate from the Ministry of Training, Collèges and Universities. In some cases, when the trade requires it, they can also obtain a professional qualification certificate if they successfully complete the competency exam.

The Apprenticeship formula is interesting for the apprentice who receives money in exchange of his work and for the employer who benefits from a motivated staff who wants to increase his professional qualification profile.

To register to an Apprenticeship program, you must…

  • Find yourself a sponsor –the employer must be willing to supervise your hours of practical training.
  • With your sponsor, contact the office of the Ministry of Training, Collèges and Universities (MTCU) of your region. The MTCU will give you an Apprenticeship contract number and a guide of program standards for Apprenticeship training.
  • Register yourself to the Apprenticeship sector of Collège Boréal, 1-800-361-6673, ext. 3003 or apprentissage@collegeboreal.ca
