Nearly 500 diplomas granted at Collège Boréal’s 17th graduation ceremony in Sudbury

Sudbury – Parents and friends gathered today to celebrate the nearly 500 students of Collège Boréal who were honoured at the college’s 17th graduation ceremony on its main campus in Sudbury. Once again this year, Collège Boréal’s various awards of excellence recognized the qualities and merits of their recipients.
Governor General’s Academic Medal
Susana Garcia, a graduate of the Early Childhood Education program in Windsor, received the Governor General’s Academic Medal. This medal is awarded to the graduating student who obtained the highest average in a diploma program. With this medal comes a $1,000 bursary offered jointly by the college’s Student General Association and the Collège Boréal Foundation.
Merit Scholarships
Céline Beaudry, a graduate of the Practical Nursing program in Timmins, was awarded the School of Health Sciences Merit Scholarship, while Charles Viau, a graduate of the Electronics Engineering Technologist –industrial program in Sudbury, received the School of Trades and Applied Technology Merit Scholarship. Above-mentioned Susana Garcia also won the School of Business and Community Services / School of Arts Merit Scholarship. These three bursaries are worth $1,000 each.

The Denis-Hubert-Dutrisac Award of Excellence, which recognizes the secondary school student with the highest average who has enrolled in a postsecondary program at Collège Boréal, was awarded to Andrée Line Legault. Presently a student at École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité in West Nipissing and enrolled in the Medical Radiation Technologist program, Andrée Line Legault will receive a $2,000 scholarship.
Personal Merit Scholarships
Three Personal Merit Scholarships were also awarded. Laurier Loranger, a graduate of the Personal Support Worker program in New Liskeard, received the Gisèle-Chrétien Award of Excellence. Serge Gaudette, a graduate of the Electrical Engineering Technician program in Timmins, won the Jean-Watters Award of Excellence, and Jean-Sébastien Tremblay, a graduate of the Mining and Civil Engineering Technologist program, won the Collège Boréal Foundation Award of Excellence. Each of these scholarships is worth $1,000.
Gaétan-Gervais Bursary from ACFO du Grand Sudbury
Gaétan-Gervais Bursary recognizes a young person’s contribution to the development and promotion of the Franco-Ontarian community. This $100 award was presented to Miquel Larocque, a graduate of the Physical Activity and Health Promotion program, in Sudbury.
Ontario First Generation Bursaries
Nineteen ministerial bursaries were also awarded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. These $1,000 bursaries provide targeted support to students who achieved excellence in their studies and whose parents have not attended a college or a university.
Vale Bursaries
Six bursaries were awarded this year by the mining company Vale to students at College Boréal who are enrolled in programs related to the mining sector. To obtain these bursaries, students must achieve excellence in their studies, participate in extracurricular or community activities and demonstrate financial need. These bursaries worth $2,000 each were awarded to these students in the following programs:
- Patrick Gagnon, Mining and Civil Engineering Technologist
- Sylvain Fortin, Mechanical Engineering Technician
- Pierre Daoust, Electrical Engineering Technologist
- Stéphan Noël, Mining and Civil Engineering Technologist
- Joseph Benoit, Mining and Civil Engineering Technologist
- Jessica Belzile, Environmental Chemical Technician
Aboriginal Postsecondary Education and Training Bursaries
These bursaries are awarded to Aboriginal students to support their participation in postsecondary studies and training. The winners for 2011-2012 are:
- Nicole Bernier ($1,500), Diagnostic Ultrasonography (postdiploma), Sudbury
- Martin Chartrand ($1,500), Computer Engineering Technician, Sudbury
- Nim Ischou Dubé-Spencer ($3,000), Office Administration – General, Toronto
Forestry Technologist Program Bursaries
These bursaries are aimed to support promising graduates in the Forestry field. These bursaries worth $1,200 each were awarded to the following students:
- Natalie Vincent, Forestry and Wildlife Management (Eacom Bursuary)
- Justin Richardson, Forestry and Wildlife Management (Nipissing Forest Management Company
- Kevin Jiricka, Forestry and Wildlife Management (Vermilion Forest Management Company Bursary)
- Bursary)
It is worth mentioning that 12 bursaries of $1,000 each were awarded by the Consortium national de formation en santé (CNFS), 5 bursaries were also awarded as part of the Dental Hygiene program, and 14 others through the Funeral Services Education program.
In total, 742 diplomas and certificates were presented at graduation ceremonies held this year at Collège Boréal’s seven campuses.
Highest graduation rate and graduate satisfaction rate across Ontario!
For the ninth time in the last 10 years, Collège Boréal has the highest graduation rate of Ontario’s 24 colleges of applied arts and technology. Besides, Collège Boréal also attained the highest graduate satisfaction rate of all these community colleges. This achievement confirms 8 first places obtained over the last 11 years. Established in 1995, Collège Boréal is a French-language postsecondary training and learning institution dedicated to the development and growth of Northern and Central-Southwestern Ontario communities.
